The Great Migration: 2026 Logistical Outlook
The Great Migration is not a single event, but a continuous cycle driven by rainfall patterns and grazing availability. As we approach the July–September 2026 window, current data from the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem suggests a standard timeline for the northward movement.

As of late March, the mega-herds remain concentrated in the southern Serengeti plains following the calving season. We are monitoring the transition toward the Western Corridor. By June, the vanguard of the migration is expected to reach the Grumeti River, signaling the start of the push toward the Kenyan border.
At Makiwa Kenya Safaris, we treat the migration as a logistical operation. We don’t guess where the herds will be; we follow the grass and the water. If you are planning for 2026, ensure your itinerary allows for at least three nights in the Mara to account for the unpredictable nature of river crossings.
The 2026 Crossing Forecast
Based on early rainfall indicators, the arrival in the Maasai Mara is projected for mid-July.
July (The Arrival): Initial crossings of the Sand River into the Mara Reserve. Grazing pressure in the south will force the herds north toward the lush, permanent waters of the Mara River.
August (Peak Activity): This is the high-intensity period for Mara River crossings. During this time, our 4×4 fleet is positioned to navigate the high-traffic viewing points while maintaining route flexibility to access quieter, secondary crossing sites.
September (The Resident Herds): The herds generally settle into the northern conservancies. This period offers stable wildlife density and excellent photographic opportunities before the return journey begins in late October.
Field Logistics & Planning
Navigating the migration requires more than just a map. The “Black Cotton” soil in the Mara remains a factor after any late-season showers.
Vehicle Prep: Our Land Cruisers are fitted with high-gain radio systems to track movement in real-time across the reserve.
Route Optimization: To avoid the congested “spectator” loops, we prioritize early departures to secure vantage points at the more remote crossing bottlenecks.
